John Smith’s Stadium for Huddersfield
The stadium was truly ground breaking for it's time.
When most stadia in the 1990s consisted of four rectilinear grandstands surrounding the pitch, this stadium broke the mould, providing stands with a radiating, segmented footprint and curved roof-structure supported by elegant, arching, prismatic trusses.
Home to Huddersfield Town FC and Huddersfield Giants RFC, the development included the 25,000 seat stadium and the North Stand Complex which included offices, swimming pool, hotel, dance studio and health club.
The client was considered as bold as the design, and its reward was the RIBA Building of Year award - the UK’s premier architectural award. This stadium remains the only true sports building to have been honoured.
